Accessibility Statement
Website Accessibility Statement
This website is run by South Darley C.E. Primary School and this statement applies to www.southdarley.derbyshire.sch.uk (April 2026). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- Change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings.
- Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
- Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
Accessibility Features
- Responsive Design: Our website is designed to work on various devices and screen sizes, including desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.
- Keyboard Navigation: The website is navigable via keyboard to accommodate users who cannot use a mouse.
- Text Readability: We use clear and legible fonts, sufficient colour contrast and adjustable text size to enhance readability.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
School exemption
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the exemptions and non-compliances listed below.
Primary and secondary schools have a partial exemption from the accessibility regulations — they must ensure accessibility for content people need in order to use their services, for example, a form that lets you outline school meal preferences.
Non-compliant content
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- Most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- Some downloadable documents are in Word (.doc and .docx) format, which may not open easily on mobile devices and are not fully accessible to screen readers
- The website template restricts pinch-to-zoom on mobile devices, which prevents users from enlarging text.
- Embedded Google Maps are not accessible within the site
- Some pages contain tables with fixed widths that do not display properly on smaller screens.
- Zoom and text resizing: The website template includes code that prevents users from zooming in on mobile devices. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.4 (Resize Text). This is a platform-level issue managed by our website provider, Juniper Education. We have raised this with Juniper for resolution.
- Images: We endeavour to ensure that, where needed, we include alternative text for any images. If any images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information, we will rectify this if notified. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content). We are adding alt text to images as part of our ongoing website improvement work.
- Video: We endeavour to ensure that, where needed, we include frame titles, captioning and transcriptions for any videos. If any videos do not have a frame title, captions or transcriptions, so people using assistive technology cannot access the information, we will rectify this if notified. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA success criterion 1.2.2 (Captions — Prerecorded).
- Links: We endeavour to ensure that, where needed, we include appropriate use of links and ensure that links are descriptive. If any links are not descriptive, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information, we will rectify this if notified. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose).
- Tables: We endeavour to ensure that, where needed, tables have the appropriate headings set. Some pages currently contain tables with fixed pixel widths that overflow on small screens, requiring horizontal scrolling. If any tables do not have defined headings or do not display correctly, so people using a screen reader or keyboard navigation cannot access the information, we will rectify this if notified. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow).
- Document accessibility: Some downloadable documents are in Word (.doc or .docx) format, which may not be accessible to all users. These files are also served in a way that prevents them opening correctly on mobile devices. We are working to convert documents to accessible PDF format.
Ongoing Efforts
We are continually working to improve the accessibility of our website. During 2025–2026 we are carrying out a programme of website improvements which includes:
- Adding meaningful content to replace placeholder pages
- Converting Word documents to accessible PDF format
- Adding alt text to images as pages are updated
- Fixing fixed-width tables and content areas that overflow on mobile devices
- Raising platform-level accessibility issues (zoom restriction, file handling) with our website provider, Juniper Education
- Working with Juniper Education to ensure screen reader compatibility across the site
We will incorporate feedback from users to enhance accessibility and endeavour to keep up to date with evolving accessibility standards and best practices.
Third-Party Content
While we aim to ensure all content on our website is accessible, some third-party materials or linked resources may not fully meet accessibility standards. The embedded Google Map on our Contact page is third-party content — we provide our address in text alongside the map so the information is available to all users. We encourage you to contact us if you have difficulties accessing any content on our website.
Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the "accessibility regulations"). If you are not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Technical information about this website's accessibility
