Welcome

A warm welcome to South Darley Church of England Primary School.

We are a small, friendly school in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales where, in the words of Ofsted, children "flourish in a loving family." With around 55 pupils in three classes, every member of staff knows every child by name — and every child knows they belong.

Our vision — Living as Children of Light — and the values that flow from it shape everything we do: a school where every child is known, cared for, and helped to grow. We hope this page gives you a sense of who we are. If you like what you see, we would love to show you around.

Small Enough to Know Every Child. Ambitious Enough to Stretch Every Child.

Our classes have fewer than 20 pupils, which means a much more personal education for every child.

In a school this size, every teacher knows every child — their strengths, their interests, and what they need next. Our headteacher teaches the junior classes. Your child will not be a face in a crowd. Our staff are highly experienced, and children who need additional support benefit from the individual attention that is part of everyday life in a school this size.

But small does not mean limited. Every junior learns a musical instrument. Every junior child swims. Our curriculum follows a carefully designed four-year topic rotation, and our long-running partnership with schools in Kolkata gives children a genuine window onto the wider world. We hold Music Mark School status — an external mark of our commitment to music education.

What Ofsted and SIAMS Say

Independent inspections confirm what families experience every day; Ofsted judged South Darley Good in all areas in March 2024, finding that pupils have "excellent attitudes to learning" and "behave very well." Parents agree — in our surveys, families describe a school where children "flourish from being shy infants to being bold and confident Year 6s."

Our Church inspection (SIAMS, December 2023) found that "pupils flourish because they are known as unique individuals and cared for by all staff."

You can read the full reports on our Inspection Reports page.

A School at the Heart of Its Community

South Darley is more than a school. Our children and families are part of a close community rooted in village life.

We have a genuine, living partnership with St Mary's Church — regular family services, seasonal celebrations, and a pupil-led Values team that leads worship for the wider congregation. Children of all faiths and none are welcome, and what matters is the caring, respectful community we build together.

FOSDS (Friends of South Darley School) welcomes every new family automatically and runs a programme of social events throughout the year — for families new to the area, the school is an instant community.

Follow us on Facebook to keep up with school life. Parents tell us it is "a lovely school" — we would love you to see for yourselves.

Come and See for Yourself

The best way to get to know South Darley is to visit. We welcome visitors throughout the year — not just on set open days. Come and see a normal school day, meet our staff, and talk to our children.

We offer wraparound care from 8:00am to 6:00pm every school day — you can find full details on our Joining Us page.
